Default are the dowels between the head and the block

Just curious if the dowels between the head and the block are simply for placement as I only have 1 of them? I am assuming they are useless for people with studs and a novelty for people with bolts. Any ideas?

I would definitely use both.

Those dowels make sure the head is positioned correctly on the block, and the valves are centered over the cyls.

they keep the head gasket in its correct place and ensure near perfect placement of head/block.

I would have been nervous my headgasket would have shifted the slightest bit while placing the head on had the dowels not been holding the headgasket perfectly centered.

I would have been nervous but the hg slides nicely over the ARP studs, so there isn't any movement there.
