Default Downshift to 2nd gear

Hi guys,

Quite a weird problem. Search results did not bring up anything on this one.

My problem is only evident when in slow moving traffic where shifts between 3rd, 2nd and again 3rd gear are required. 50% of the time when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd the gear lever just does not slot into 2nd at all, leaving me with the only option of stopping completely and engage first. I would have lost too much speed to engage 3rd.

Other than that, the gearbox works perfect when down shifting in other gears or upshifting in all the gears including 2nd...no issues.

Recently I had a new clutch installed and a complete transmission fluid change, but the symptom remained.

Very mysterious and in slow traffic its frustrating.

thanks guys!

Is your clutch fluid dirty or low?

How many miles does your car has?
Has your transmission oil have been changed regularly?
Does this happens going from 1st to 2nd?

Synchro may be worn, but I'm not a transmission guru.

car has 60k miles and transmission fluid and clutch are also brand new. first to second shifts perfect. just the downshift frm third to second thats the problem.

have you tried going from 3rd to 1st to 2nd? While holding the clutch in?

^DO NOT TRY THAT. you will just grind and grind and grind trying to get it into 1st while moving slowly (if you dont rev match).

My suggestion:

1) 3-> N
2) Rev it up to 2-3K
3) N->2

it should go in. dont try to baby it too much either, you have to do it with reasonable force but not extreme force..

@ikeyballz
thats kind of double declutching...doesnt work either. i will change to honda mtf this week but i doubt it will solve anything. you cant even blame the synchro coz shifting up to second from first works perfect even at very high revs...nice and neat. the rest of the up and down shifting works perfect too, so you cant really put the blame on anything particular.

I had the same issue, was locked out of 2nd. I had the syncros replaced under warranty so its smooth shifting now. But that was the only way for me to get into 2nd gear. Worked for me.

Ex: If I had to get to second I would simply hold the clutch in go from 3rd to 1st to 2nd let clutch out. If I tried going from 3rd immediately to 2nd it wouldn't budge.

@ikeyballz

actually, your method did work out this morning

@1Sik_s2K
You said you change your synchro, but when did you experiece your issue with 2nd gear? On shifting up or down?

Mine shifts up from 1st to 2nd just fine...could it still be the synchro as well in this case?
