Dreaded thrust washer replacement
Hi all…. I have been recently researching the thrust washer problem with the 06-09 being installed backwards……so I decided to measure the crank walk……I have not received the tool yet to measure it…..but my question is has anyone ever tried replacing these 2 thrust washers with the engine in the car, and just dropping the oil pan and lower bearings……I was wondering if they can slide out without removing the crank…….as I was reading the S2000 OEM service manual on engine assembly….. and according to the manual, you drop in the crank first, then install the washers……and I’ve seen YouTube video of someone replacing the thrust washers on a 2005 civic,, and the washers were able to be replaced without removing the crank…..?
here is the YouTube video for a 2005 civic, just wondering if the S2000 is the same…has anyone done this?

If you had a lot of metal in the oil or a lot of end play, I'd prolly pull the crankshaft and mic the main and connecting bearings.
No point in putting in new thrust bearings, if you are going to need the other bearings, too.

The only symptom I ever had was a sluggish start….after the car sat for a couple of weeks….I always just thought that was due to a not fully charged battery when starting….. I get over 300 miles on a tank, and it doesn’t use any oil during the 3,000 mile oil change interval, I have no rattle or anything……but I have 121,000 miles on it….. I know the thrust washers are a wear item……and once I get the gauge I’ll be able to measure it,…
But really the question is can you replace the thrust washers on an F22 if they are still in good condition, just a little worn, BEFORE they cause any internal damage without removing the crank?

Maybe, have the oil analyzed for metal.

I just want to know if the crank needs to be removed in order to replace the thrust washers…..I was told from the dealership that the crank must be removed to put them in…..but my OEM service manual says to put the thrust washers in AFTER you ‘drop in’ the crank…..
Anyone tried replacing them before they go bad?

OP….
You stated that the thrust washers go in after the crank, you are correct. So:
1-block
2- crank
3- thrust washers
4 - lower engine half/cradle
There are a great deal of engine parts to remove in order to remove the lower cradle.
Who wants to make a list of parts to remove?
