How to reinstall TCT
In the process of using a used S2000 motor I recently bought. I've been swapping out a few components from my engine that are newer with less miles than the used engine I bought since the engine is on my engine stand and everything is easily accessible. I removed the used engine TCT and want to install the TCT from my engine. In trying to reinstall the TCT, the piston wont retract enough. It appears that I have to screw in the tensioner piston (which is pretty difficult as the spring compresses) and install a pin (that I don't have) to hold it in it's retracted position. Then install it, tighten the two bolts, remove maintenance hex nut, carefully remove the pin and reinstall the hex nut. Is this the correct procedure for reinstalling a TCT? I could only find remove and install new TCT info on YouTube, not reinstall a TCT.
Excellent video. Note that when inserting the pin or cotter pin the "NTN logo (on the back plate) must be turned counterclockwise." (1:20 in the video.) Otherwise the cotter pin's head will be on the wrong side of the piston and you can't remove it thru the hole in the front of the engine. You'll see why in the
on how to install/reinstall the TCT.
But note the install video contains a glaring error: The TCT should be pressed in all the way by hand and not drawn in with the bolts. Should be very easy since the piston is retracted.
Complete replacement OEM and @Billman250 TCTs come ready to install. Just press in, tighten the bolts, and pull the pin. Billman's requires special, shorter bolts which are furnished with the unit. I changed the TCT in 15 minutes with much of that time finding the tools and a paper towel.
It's also possible to reinstall the TCT with the piston retracted by the bolt and remove the bolt after installation. I think the Balade TCT comes this way. I don't know if there are any concerns about this method other than replacing the oil bolt and rear cover on when the TCT is installed. Regardless the piston must be fully retracted to press the TCT into the engine before tightening the bolts.
