Default Driveshaft Squeaks

My car started squeaking when I'd give it gas, so i took it to the shop and he says I need a new rear driveline because my joint is worn out. Where a U joint would normally be. He says it's a different style and you can't just change the joint. You have to replace the whole driveline. Does this sound right? Where can I go to get a used one? Should I do any mods while I'm replacing that? Lastly, is this something I could replace on my own? I don't own a lift but have jack and jack stands and know cars pretty well.

They are correct in that you can't really repair the propeller shaft and it typically gets replaced as a whole unit. I bought a spare one specifically for this reason, in case mine ever fails in the future. You can find them used from time to time on the for sale forums, or post up in the want to buy forum, as they are really expensive if you need to buy a new one from Honda. Keep in mind that the ap1 and ap2 driveshafts are different so you need to get the right one for your car.

Saying that, I am not sure that a failing propeller shaft causes a squeaking noise, they might be right but you should try to get a second opinion on that. Maybe check with Billman250 to confirm that, as I've never encountered a failed propeller shaft. When the propeller shafts fail you usually get a ring of grease being flung around the underside body in the driveline tunnel area, with a distinctive line being formed.

maybe the squeaking noise is from the belt been old or your auto tensioner is wearing down and loosing tensions on the belt thats why its causing a squeaking noise. Does it squeak during cold startup too? Hondas and other cars sqeak when the tension on the belt is not tight enough but I dont know if the s loose tensions on the auto tensioner and does the squeaking noise.
