Default Dtc 27-1: Steering Angle Sensor

Hey all,

I have this fault code along with both VSA and VSA triangle "!" Lights on, after my installation of a CR steering rack/torque sensor. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I noticed that the rack is not PERFECTLY centered (ie, turning lock to lock, turning to the left hand side does not go as far as on the right hand side by maybe .2 of a turn). I know that it is supposed to be perfectly equal from side to side. Could this be the reason why I am throwing this code? The shop I got it installed at is insisting that this is the best that they can do and that it is impossible to get it perfectly centered...

It can be realigned by pulling the steering shaft out of the torque sensor, turning it .1 turn in the proper direction (shifting by perhaps 2 teeth on the spline) and then doing the torque sensor relearn process. You could do what amounts to the same thing with the steering rod ends by moving them both in the necessary direction if there is enough thread available.

However, I do not think this would be your problem. They perhaps damaged the clock spring assembly under the steering wheel doing the install, which would cause the steering angle sensor to fail. This is easy to do if you do not remove the wheel when swapping racks and the wheel gets turned too much. The clock spring only has so many turns in it before you can damage the wires. Removing the wheel prevents it from getting canted too far in one direction at neutral position. There is a reason the factory service manual says to remove the wheel when doing the swap.

urBan_dK,

Thanks for your help. The shop is insisting that they did not break the clock spring assembly, and are saying that if they did, the SRS light would be illuminated. I believe they did remove the wheels when swapping racks, however. They also said they didn't turn the wheel any more than necessary. That said, do you still think it's the clock spring assembly? If so, do you know what is the actual part/part number?

I really appreciate it; this has been driving me nuts for the past week...

I had this same problem. Had a bud at a dealer hook the ecu up to his laptop and he told me that the angle sensor thought my steering wheel was off by 170 degrees. It basically thought it was upside down. I replaced the angle sensor and it immediately fixed the problem. I had to have him clear the VSA! lights though.

Keep in mind the steering angle sensor is behind the steering wheel and is completely separate from the torque sensor in the rack.

It sounds like you are simply "out of time" and your steering tests prove that.

I assure you it can be centered exactly.

I had the same problem, what I did was go to autozone and used their obd2 scanner. I don't remember the model of the scanner but once it read the abs/cel codes I went to the erase codes menu, reset the abs codes. fixed the issue

^well the lights - I only had the code because of my aftermarket steering wheel.
