Hi there, I've been going to my usual mechanic for years. I just noticed that my air flow tube and air intake cover are starting to turn a bit gray. I'm assuming it's from my mechanic using the yellow Simple Green to clean the engine bay in my S2K. What is safe to use to try to bring back the some of the nice black finish that it once was? Since my S2000 only has 27k miles on it, I'm going to start cleaning the engine bay on my own. Without the use of a power wash, I just want to clean all the engine bay parts by hand. Does anyone have any recommendations on bring back the black finish on the air flow tube & air intake cover? And what other products I can use for cleaning??

There is a nice aerosol spray called "back to black" I use for trim restoring by Chemical Guys.
It works great on those trucks and suvs that have that faded grey trim all over them as well as wheel wells.

As far as an engine detailer, I have been using a product "cd2" and it use to be available at auto stores but I had no luck last time and with some Googling I found Big Lots had some so I went and bought every bottle they had. Its a foaming spray that you spray on everything under the hood and then start the car and it kinda bakes on and leaves a nice "new" finish

I shine the hoses of my engine bay with tire shine as well. Works on all the rubber and also the black plastics! I dont think that tire shine products would be any harm.

 

tire shine dries out rubber. do some research before you slather that crap all over. use 303 aero. hydrates rubber, and restores black.

 

Judging by my engine bay it doesn't. Why would it dry out rubber if it's designed for, well rubber?

i have no idea. if you look at tires that have that stuff constantly applied, it dries out the sidewalls and leads to cracking.
