Engine dead
Bought my s2k a week ago and my engine is a dead duck. Previous owner over torqued a spark plug. The spark plug made contact with the piston and now the shrapnel is all in the piston housing. Mechanic told me it'll cost me more to get it fixed than it would to just do an engine swap. What should I do? Buy a used ap1 engine? Try and do a rebuild? I need all the help I can get. And anyone who knows where I can get a good ap1 engine would be much appreciated! Also possibly looking for a new tranny while I'm completely gutting her.

A decent AP1 engine will run you about $2,600 plus another $900 for installation, if it costs more than this to rebuild then yeah get a new block. I'm guessing to fix you'll have to remove the head, replace the valves if they're damaged, re-sleeve the block if you f'ed up the cylinder wall, new pistons. If you ruined the threads on the spark plug, well you'll need a new cylinder head, at that point you might as well just get a new engine, and if you can, get a 2004 or 05 AP2 engine and ecu instead.

hmm over torque made the piston hit spark plug. Sounds fishy I dont buy it. But anyway.....
I would rebuild I like to know what I got. Sleeved block would be nice.
I see lots of folks having problems with engine swaps.

Any recommendations for parts/brands? I don't know what has been damaged until I rip it apart, but I might as well start assuming the worst and hope for the best.

Thats the thing you need to make a list of what you need. Not sure what you need to replace. Your oem cylinders may still be good! You will have to inspect the cylinders. Get a bore scope and see in there. I would just use the oem liners until they go bad then re-sleeve later. Canton makes sleeves. Anyway our experts will most likely tell you to stay with an OEM rebuild. I tend to agree with that wont go wrong there. If cylinder walls are bad then I would go ahead and use the sleeves and try to keep compression ratio and bore close to stock. I have rebuilt zero of these motors. I have a local shop that I trust to do the machine work on my cars.
My s runs strong no need to rebuild shooting for 300k.
Hope your damage is minimal.
