Had my oil changed on a 2006 S2000 with 12K miles at a local Honda dealer in norther NJ. They forgot to put the engine oil cap back on the engine. I was driving home and started toi heard a knocking sound. I pulled over, opened the hood and noticed engine oil cap was missing. Checked the oil and it was down to the last star on the dip stick (1 out of 5 stars full).

Dealer towed it back in, ran tests, and said it was fine. They said the knocking was due to the missing oil cap and normal engine sound withou a cap

Engine does not knock now, but people say that once an engine knocks that is damage occurring in the engine.

Anyone have any ideas about the truth if my engine is damaged?

Any way to check without tearing it apart?

Dipstick shows you've lost no more than a quart.

 

vincewchan - that is what the dealer told me, just cannot figure out the knocking sound.

 

I doubt they hurt anything since there was still oil registering on your dipstick. I would def. document the day, time, where and what EXACTLY happened in case you run into a problem down the road. Maybe even write up a statement for signature and go to the dealer and ask them to sign it....

 

The engine knock that you think you are hearing is probably the missing oil cap that fell down and is wedge between the engine and firewall and sitting on top of the transmission. If you still hear a rattle from time to time, you might want to go fishing for it.

 

Go find the oil cap...

 

didn't you notice any smoke from the hood?

 

there was no smoke from the oil, only drove it for about 5 miles before I started to hear the noise.

Honda service did not find the oil cap in the engine compartment. The noise was a knocking, not a rattle.

 

The cap is probably stuck between the trans and the body

 

Seems to be happening when cars are left into dealers for servicing...Just nit good enough..hope there is no damage to your car...
