Default engine noise

Hi everyone, best wishes for all in the new year. My ap1 has developed a noise similar to a fan blade hitting up against something on top of the engine valve cover. plugs where checked and replaced with new, old ones intact but worn thinking that maybe a cylinder shut down due to low spark. no previous warning lights, engine had sufficient oil. Car drives and shifts, but when the clutch is pressed in the noise stops. If any one can help please chime in, eventually the car is going to the shop, but which one is another question. Ive had minor stuff done with our local shop but I thinky this is going to be big and 3rd gear syncro needs addressing. My prayers is that the engine is not blown and the tranny or clutch have the problem. Thank you for your time.

Can you take a vid so we can hear the sound?

It is odd that the sound goes away when you engage the clutch. It may just be the clutch rattling.

Perfect...that sounds like your timing chain tensioner (aka TCT). Are you sure it goes away when you push the clutch in?? The TCT and the clutch don't have anything to do with each other, so the sound shouldn't be going away when you engage the clutch.

The TCT costs about $120 and takes about 10 min to install.

Yeah that sounds like the TCT brother. Are you sure it goes away everytime you engage the clutch........?

How many miles you have on the car already?
that sound can be the sound of needed valve adjustments.....?

Yeah, it would be great if you could get those pesky valve clearances checked, just for peace of mind.

Thanks for the replies guys. the family mechanic is taking a look at it. the car has 78k miles. we replaced teh clutch at 73k miles, but never invested in a flywheel. any recomendations on a flywheel? i was looking at the findanza 8lb. but ive heard with such a light flywheel there some chatter. Ill probably be replacing the TCT while the car is at the shop. thanks again for the replies

There's a thread in the FAQs that tells you what is involved when replacing the TCT...it's really simple...

The timing chain is a special order item through the dealership. the parts tech at the Honda dealership in north miami, Alex, was very helpfull and inquired with the mechanics on how often the chain needed to be changed. He was told that its rare and probably should consider the water pump and fan belt instead at 80000mls. I will still look into the thread and will change the TCT for safes. No word from mechanic still.
