When you mention engaging clutch makes it go away, I think throwout bearing. I've never heard one "flap" though. It usually is a bad bearing type noise. Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

i think i got the same thing as the OP.

when at idling at a standstill and not in gear i hear a "flapping" type noise but when i engage the clutch (not in gear, just clutch pedal in) it goes away. i've only noticed this at idle because it pretty feint.

i'm fairly certain the noise is coming from the tranny.

i'm chalked it up to the throwout bearing but i'm not gonna do a tranny teardown just for that. am i stupid to just let it go?

After coming back from seeing billman he thinks is the tranny...We will see what it really is when i have a clutch replacement done.

But most likely it is the tranny since noise goes away as soon as clutch is touched.
