Engine operating louder in cooler temps?
anyone else notice their engines operating at a louder volume especially from 4k+ rpm during cold weather(like tonight it was 40 degrees)? just a question out of curiousity.

All cars do that - the colder temps tighten the parts that fall into prooper alignment when operating temps are normal. It does not hurt anything, and is factored in by the engineers. My Outback has done that from Day 1, and there is even a TSB for the dealers to explain it to people (the Subie has specially cdoated pistons they later designed to reduce this effect).
I will say that using 0w30 Amsoil for the first time the other day in the Sube really reduced the noise - these super-flow at cool temps oils are pretty amazing.

The Sube calls for either 10w30 or 5w30. It ranges up to 20w50 for heavy towing in high temps, but this car is sold worldwide, and very popular in Australia, where summer temps in the Outback might swamp an outback.
Yes, i am seriously considering using Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 in the S2000. It has the best additive package they make. But the 10w30 is also terrific, and since I do not drive a lot of miles, I may just stick with that. The Amsoil 0w30 is recommended for any 5w30 or 10w30 spec'd engine. I will check to make sure it does not cause any oil weeping from gaskets. It is completely shear stable and uses little or no VI improver.
I also have had 20 years experience with red Line, and it has never failed me. So I may use 10w30 RL. But there is an Amsoil warehouse here in Richmond, and the cost of my buying direct from RL and shipping East is high, and a hassle.
