Engine Problem

An over rev takes a while to manifest itself in an engine failure. It can take weeks for the engine to fail.

The valves bend slightly and over the coming weeks they get weaker and weaker.

If you did have an over rev it will be logged in the ECU, and Honda will be able to scan for it from the ECU.

If it is indeed an overrev which has caused it, it will be visible when you take the top off the engine...

:agree: Over-revs due to miss-shift will show up later a lot of time. Was your over-rev a mechanical one due to an accidental downshift, or do you mean you hit the rev limiter (ran the engine all the way to 9k where it bounced). If it is mechanical you are probably screwed, if it was the later, then you did no damage to your car and there is something else wrong. Also ask your cousin if he miss-shifted while he owned it.

my cousin sold me the car....but he works for a dealer. there was 1 or 2 times that i had mis-shifted but that was back in june when i first got the car.

just got word from the dealership. when the car got to their the battery was dead. they replaced/charged the battery and got the engine to turn over. at that point in time there was a piston that had no compression and was misfiring. he told me that the valves collided with the pistons and therefore caused my car to stop working. they are going to get a computer reader tomorrow to determine what rpm this all happened. the most common cause is the engine over revving. like i said before...i noticed the car not working at 45 mph and i know i was in 3rd and might have hit 6 or 7 grand...but that is no where near redline. we shall see tomorrow when they run the computer.

You hitting 7k rpm will not have harmed it. These engines will hit 9k day in, day out for yeaqrs with no problem if treated correctly.

Your bent valve has come from a shock over rev.

Its unlikely that it was due to acceleration, as the limiter will kick in.

A downshift to the wrong gear can see 9k rpm plus (you can get upto 20k I think) - much over 11k ish would be enough of a shock to bend a valve. As I said, it may manifest itself much later than the over rev.

I would make sure you are there when they look at the code, as it may be timestamped. When it happened will be crucial to you having to pay out thousands or nothing. If it happened before you bought it, I would think you have some grounds for complaint - if it happened when you owned it then its your fault.

Hopefully disconnecting he battery doesnt delete over rev records. I dont think it does - but other ECu codes would be erased.

There are no secret over-rev codes in your 2001 s2k.

So don't let anyone BS you. All they can extract is the freeze data at the time the CEL came on, if it ever did.

if they try to pull anything...or get me in a loop hole to void out the warranty...anything for my defense??? this is a new one for me...going against the dealer for the warranty to protect what happened with my car.

And if anyone actually mechanically overeved it you can tell by the damage done.Valves don't bend on there own.

There is a big difference from downshifting and mechanically exceeding 9000rpm than not getting it to upshift and revving to 7000.

Moss-Magnuson isn't going to help you with a mechanical overrev, and neither will Hondacare.

Yes yes...the only way to bend a valve is driver error (unless the chain breaks but that is highly unlikely).

the worst that i could imagine doing...which i dont remember doing this at all...is going from 4th to 3rd to get into vtech. i would only do that if i was in 4th below 6000 and then go to 3rd to get into vtech....again i dont remember doing that at all....i was just going to lunch.
