anytime the clutch is between being fully engaged and disengaged, the clutch is slipping. it isn't fully mated to the flywheel. so if you rev up the engine while the clutch pedal is partially pushed in, you are burning a thin layer off the clutch plate. you probably didnt do that much harm if its your first time, but definately avoid doing this in the future. no offense to the females out there, but they love riding the clutch and i had to replace my girlfriends civic clutch with only 10k miles on it!!!!

btw a burned out clutch should smell like rotten fish, not burning engine oil.

Do you see white smoke when you burn the clutch?

Yep saw a few puffs of white smoke. Considering that I've been driving stick all my life a feel a bit sheepish that I did it The only minor concern is that the smell I got was alot closer to buring oil than say rotten fish that people descibe with the burnt clutch. Thanks all!

Funny you should post about this, I tried to back my 01 into the garage the other day and it had no power. Had to keep it at about 4000 rpm or it threatened to die. about a 20 degree incline. (new to the car only had it for <150 miles) I did not burn the clutch though, no smoke or funny smell, just no power in reverse. Can not explain it.

Felt like the e-brake was fully engaged (it was not, handle dowqn, no dash brake light). Car shows no other sign of a problem except it did not like reverse this one time. Backed it in three times before without a problem, that time had zero power. Tried it again the next day, worked just like it should. Can't explain it.

I have been driving a stick for almost 20 years, never had a clutch replaced yet. I don't think it was me, just the car behaving very oddly.

I will give it a shot, going to swap all the fluids when it rolls out in the spring. Car only has 14k on the odometer, I suppose that could be long enough for new fluid, but in every other instance car/tranny extremely smooth.
