Default Engine Rattle / Canny noise

Hi All,

I've searched the forum, but couldn't find a similar topic.

I drive an S2000 from 2000-05 with about 120K kilometers on the dash. When I return from a drive and my engine is at the proper temperature, there is an increasingly annoying 'tick' in my engine. It is a bit like a rattle, or the sound you here when you use a knife to tick against an empty can. It does not happen when I just started my engine.

It should not be the oil level, this is near the 'high' marker of the engine oil thingy (don't know the English word for that).

Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this sound, and how I can fix this?

Gr.

Ralph

I think it's normal. My CRX did it, my S2000 does it, my friends Prelude does it. I think it may be the entire exhaust cooling. Not really sure just guess. It keeps "ticking" for a while after you have shut it off right? That's what you're talking about right? If not, it may be something else. By the way whats a kilometer? :-)

Thanks for your reply.

It is not the tick you hear when the engine is cooling down. I hear it when the engine is idle when it is hot.

Take a look at the following:

Cold engine

Hot engine

Do you notice the diesel like tick when the engine is idleing?

Diesel sound?? That's description is most commonly associated with the Timing Chain Tensioner (TCT). Very easy fix...but very important to do it soon to avoid serious engine damage.

In the US the part is under $200...but prices seem to be jacked up higher for Euro folk.

(just listened to the vid...TCT big time and bad...get it changed this week...Monday if possible)

TCT usually exhibits the sound on startup, in this case the OP's car is noisier after it has fully warmed up. The video almost sounds like some of the other clips where the car has a scuffed bore or had bearing issues inside the engine. That being said, I'm no mechanic, so I'm just guessing and going off of other engine noise clips that I've seen on here.

What kind of oil are you using?

Without listening I thought: Maybe the cat.
After listening I guess: TCT.

The cold engine noise sounds IMO normal, the extra noise sounds like the air pump.
The warm engine ticking for a short period sounds like the TCT.
The warm engine "diesel" noise...
What is the service history on the car?
Filters, oil, spark plugs, that kinda stuff.
Does the car have the OEM S2000 oil filter?
Those things are stuff to watch and may be an indication of how it has been serviced in the past.

Hi,

Thanks for your post

To answer your questions:

The car was last serviced at a Honda dealer in November 2006 at 107.000 km. Right now it is at 112k.

During that service, they should have replaced the oil filter and the oil. I have recently topped it off with 1 litre of Q8 5w-30 (I have checked all major gas stations, but no one sold 10w-30). Spark plugs have been replaced due to the recall a few years ago. Service interval seems OK with services at 5, 45, 60, 75, 86 and 107K kilometers. The first 5 services were in Germany, where I have the impression cars are serviced a lot better that here in The Netherlands, even if you go to dealers.

The car is fully stock, no aftermarket parts are installed.

Still sounds like a TCT issue

(I have checked all major gas stations, but no one sold 10w-30).
Why do you think that is the case?
Because that is totally outdated oil!
"We" in Europe have moved on

The 5W-30 oil is a much better choice
The last service was in Germany?

Check the stickies on top of UTH for pictures of the S2000 specific oil filter.
Then check your car to see if it is there.
What brand & size rear tires do you have?
