i too have done this. what can i say, i have itchy fingers.
as long as the clutch pedal is not depressed, it will do nothing.
if you were crusing down main street at speed, depress the clutch pedal and activate the start button it will grind.
its the same thing as starting your mom's ford explore then cranking the key agian.... CLAAAAAAAAKKK!!! it'll grind. but only if the clutch is depressed. unless you have them neutral safety bypass for remote starts....

and in response to the remark about this being the stupidest ever, it's actually smart that he asks before he tries it without knowing of the outcome. smart people ask questions to thing they do not know. thats how they know answers to question you eventually need to ask them.

I meant that remark in a nagging way Kind of like the "stick" smiley.

I just see no need as to why you would need or want to press the start button while the car is already on. If you love start button that much then get one that turns on the lights as well

There are some cars that are protected against this, can't confirm the s2k personally.

Lemme go out to the customer's car I have here and try it

I was asking this because, the volume control is over by the start button and sometimes I find my fingers near the start button when I do to adjust the volume on the stereo.
