Don't you think that having lower temps would make the engine last longer? I know that the oil needs to be above 160 degrees or so, but I would think it would be best to keep it as close to that as possible, instead of the temps getting up to 215 degrees or more.

Lower temperatures are usually associated with faster wear rates. The factory spec for minimum oil operating temperature is 176F, but those with oil temp guages report under hard running the oil will be over 220F with or without the cooling mods.

Be careful with this data!!!

Which unit did you use ST20/30/40/60/80? Are you well versed in the meanings of the distance to spot size number and it's implications here? I'm all for science but thermal imaging is a little touchy.

Utah
P.S. The Raytech manufactur's thermometers as opposed to pyrometers (which cost a lot more and have a different distance to spot aspect ratio by definition).

The Raytek MT4 has a 6:1 distance to spot size. That did make the measurements more difficult, but we just put it right up to it. That is why I think that the most accurate readings are the oil filter, head, and radiator hose. Those measurements were taken easily from 1/2" away.
