If you are facing the EPS unit the input plug from the firewall goes in the right side and the output the left. As the unit is mounted on the right hand side of the car (from drivers perspective) in a RHD model the input socket is closer to the firewall so the input and output don't cross.
I expect on a LHD car it is the same module but mounted on the left. Hence the input socket is further forward that the output socket and the input and output plugs cross under the unit. This would lead to the sort of confusion you refer to with them being incorrectly connected.

US Spec cars have the EPS control unit mounted to the outboard side of the battery, on the passengers or right side. The 2 plugs that can swap will reach either position.

The turbo sits right beside the EPS unit but there is an ABS unit and master cylinder in between. I did massively over heat the turbo once due to a retard (the timing, not me) and as a result replaced the ABS unit. I won't be surprised if this is the problem.

I have since shielded the turbo pretty heavily and got the crank position signal correct so it won't happen again.

If you can find a tester EPS unit it would be worth shot.. Doing all the input tests to the EPS unit many not tell you anything, sometimes replacing with a known good component is easiest.
Well I have a confession to make.
Seems my power steering was working all along.
I pulled my EPS box and tried to turn the wheel and absolutely no go. I guess the 235s I'm running at the front are making it feel like I have no power assistance when I actually have, just not enough.
