I currently own a 2004 S2k with 42,000 miles on it. I have been struggling with the dreaded EPS issue and I cannot figure it out. I would love some help if anyone has had success sorting theirs out.
What’s happening:
When I start the car and back it out of my garage, as I am turning the steering wheel left I feel small jerk in the steering wheel then I completely lose power steering. I have a friend who is a mechanic who scanned the car and the following codes are coming up. See the attached picture.
What I’ve done:
1. Removed the EPS and checked the connections for corrosion.
Result = No corrosion, EPS issues still continued.
2.Removed the torque sensor from the steering rack.
Result: It was very clean and did not need re-greased. I did not clean it with WD-40 either. I reinstalled it and the EPS issue still continued.
3. Completed the EPS sensor relearn procedure.
Result: It worked briefly but the EPS code came back.
What I have not done yet:
1. Replaced the EPS.
2. Replaced the torque sensor.
3. Replaced the steering rack.
The photos are different sides of the same EPS, right? These parts are fairly common on Ebay.
According to a Honda part search, the following EPS control units are interchangeable for 2004-2009 US Base AP2 models: 39980-S2A-A03, 39980-S2A-A04, 39980-S2A-A05.
I didn't find an A0 ((zero) but A01 and A02 are for the early (2000-2003) cars with a faster steering ratio, 13.8:1 compared to 14.9:1. Early 2.4 vs later 2.6 steering wheel turns lock to lock.
I've had two different EPS failures in my S2000 ownership. One with the rack itself which shorted (check your grounds), and one when the Power Steering Control Module. Mostly determined by checking for continuity and resistance by measuring connections with a multimeter.
As someone mentioned, they can be found online. I bought one from AZ Recylers and it fixed my issue. I went without power steering for close to two years until I read a thread with a similar problem and that was the issue.
Also, there’s a shop that can repair the module for a few hundred dollars.
Step 1 - I replaced the Torque Steer Sensor and it did not solve the problem.
Step 2 - I pulled the EPS module, sent it to NSX rack repair and they repaired the internals. I reinstalled it and the problem was solved. Great service and fast turnaround.
Thanks for the update! So helpful when folks follow up with an update for those in the future that have the same issues. Glad they got you working again.
