Default EPS Reset noise

My car's been down for a bit, and upon first startup, i noticed that the EPS light was on, and that i had no power steering. I initially assumed worst case scenario, and purchased a new EPS control module, which resulted in the exact same circumstances. I then read up on resetting the module, which i figured was at least worth a try, so i followed the procedure of turn the wheels to straight, short the scs module 4 to 9, flip the ignition enough to turn the wheel, turn it left 45deg, flip the ignition, wait for the EPS light to go off, turn it straight and wait for it to turn on, left off, straight blink twice and then blink 3 times. After it blinked twice, it blinked 3 times accompanied by a very loud knocking sound from the EPS module. this knocking sound only quit when i flipped the ignition off and then back on. yes, i'm certain it was from the EPS module. Upon flipping the ignition back on, the EPS light was back on, and upon starting the car, the power steering was still not functional. This happened with both the old and the new EPS modules. I'm working on a 2001 with an AEM v1 ecu and an aftermarket module that provides stock engine temp readout. the tune and the temp readout are fine. not sure if that's relevant, but figured i'd add it since this seems like a possible wiring issue. anyway, i'd appreciate any constructive input. thanks.
