Default Exedy/Cusco Clutch

I recently purchased a used Cusco/Exedy clutch that had 300miles on it. This past weekend when my mechanic went to install it, we noticed the clutch disk pads were very thin and seemed as if it had more than 300miles on it. Also, the pressure plate had grooves dug into as if it was a record. Is this normal for this clutch to be like this after 300 miles? Here are some pictures:

Here is a picture of the LP Grooves:

Here is a picture of the pad thickness:

Doesn't look like nearly enough friction material to me, in fact it looks almost done, no way I would install that friction disk. PP either for that matter. Sorry to say but I think you got burned.

I had an exedy on my old civic that i removed after just 200 miles and it looks similar to this. Race clutches don't have much padding to begin with and the grooves are going to appear regardless.

Many of my friends that race their cars say this is a normal wear.

Give it a try, you should be fine. If anything, just purchase a new disk if you're worried about that.

Maybe I am incorrect, I am not an expert on clutches, but I have never seen one new(ish) with that little material on the F.D. Hopefully someone with more clutch knowledge/experience will post up here.. Slows?? Billman??

Just clean down everything real good with some brake cleaner to remove any excess dirt/residue that may be on there. I've seen clutches in more worse condition go in and still grab real strong for longer periods.

I can pretty much guarantee that the clutch in that condition will still grab much harder than any stock clutch.

You really shouldn't have too much to worry about. That is a harsh clutch for street use though. You'll get used to it..

ilovehonda, you're not the guy who sold him this clutch by chance? I just noticed your S2KI age, and that this is the only place you've posted.
I'm sorry but a "Pretty much gurantee" from someone with 0 days on the boards who is allegedly also not an owner is a "Pretty much WORTHLESS gurantee" IMO.

I would pretty much bet that futomame is more concerned how long this clutch may last rather than with how it grabs at this point.

I know that carbon/racing P.P. material is much thinner than organic, but that just looks too thin to me.. you can call Exedy and ask them what the thickness is supposed to be if you don't get an answer on here.. Considering costs involved, I wouldn't install it until I was sure.

imo that clutch looks very used but i'm not too up on clutches either i've only seen a couple out of cars and they were already fried......good luck....find out thicknesses before you install

Unfortunately I do not own an S2000, but I was just giving my input. Perhaps it was wrong for me to say that. Yes, this is my first day here and I'm still learning about the S. Just because I just posted here doesn't mean a thing. I care more about the technical aspects about the car than the other "little" things. Thanks for the welcome by the way.

I don't know how well it will handle the long term. It all depends on how futomame drives and what type of modifications he actually has on his car.

I just think that the clutch is still usable despite showing signs of wear. A clutch gets put to a lot of work the second it is installed. There's the downside to buying a used product. You save a buck, but you have a used product in the end.

I know that is a very expensive clutch, but not knowing how much you actually paid for it may determine what kind of "deal" you got.

I can't answer if it looks "normal" for an Exedy, as I've never seen a used one. I have seen plenty of other worn clutches, and your pic looks to be pretty worn.

There have been several people that have installed an Exedy single only to have it slip/wear out very quickly. They don't reccomend the clutch for stop and go traffic.

I think Billman has dealt with a few of these, you may want to PM him.
