I need a little bit of help. Where the exhaust meets the cat converter on my S i have a pretty decent leak. There is alot of carbonation build-up on the bottom of the flange where the two meet. I jacked my car up on the right side and put it in neutral, then friend lit a lighter nearby it, i rev'ed the car to 3k and the leak was strong enough to blow out the lighter. any recommendations on how to fix it?
Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, the supplied gasket may have disintegrated for a number of reasons, one of which is that the 3 bolts were not tightened evenly.
Separate the exhaust from the back of the cat and check the gasket. On the OEM one, you won't see much as it's a metal ring that's kind of pressed in. In this case, it wouldn't hurt to just install a new triangular gasket anyway. If you have a non-OEM exhaust, scrape off the old material and replace with a new one. Do up the 3 bolts evenly and ensure that the two mating surfaces are closing up tightly and evenly. Have the gasket on hand first.
aftermarket exhaust, spoon n1. i had a problem wiht an exhaust leak a while back too... where the exhaust meets the cat, right behind the flange (exhaust side) the piping started to crack, had to have a shop re-weld it
now this is happening where the flange's meet. where can i get a new gasket?
You may not find one exactly as what you need, but most tuner shops will carry something with the right size hole in it and you can modify it to work. Here is what the "real" gasket looks like:
