Default Expected Engine Life

I'm in the 4th year and 2nd owner of clean 00' S2K. Car has 82,000 miles and runs nice. I've looked at some of your threads and seems like this is the spot for S2K knowledge. I'm deciding to put a few $ into this thing as a good car for commuting and having fun (hard top, new seats, etc.). How long will this engine go? 200,000?

Lol I think I saw someone on autotrader a few weeks back selling a S2k with 250k mileage on it and advertising it as "runs strong and plenty more engine life" but eh I hope that statement is true :]

I've posted this comment before and took alot of grief for it but I will post it again...

The S2000 engine revs 30% more than the average Honda powerplant just to get down the road. It also takes high loads more often because it is used more often at the high end of the rpm range.

For these reasons we see some, but higher incidence of spun bearings, thrown roads, scored cylinders, etc. than with your run of the mill Honda engines.

So I would conclude that on the average the S2000 power plant will drive 30% fewer miles than the average Honda engine. If the average Honda engine life is 180k, you might expect 130K.

Not to say there won't be exceptions... there will be some that go 200 but we have also seen a number give up the ghost before 90.

if you maintain it properly and keep the oil level at H you most likely will not see any issues.

i'm at 150k and still running strong with good compression across all cylinders. It's all about how you maintain it!
