First-Gear Syncro Dead?

Yes. All the gears in the trans are synchronized, even reverse.
It's still true.
The trans is equipped with a syncho ring on every gear, some of the gears even have double cone synchro.
This doesn't mean you can shift into reverse while rolling forward.

My apologies, I just looked in the service manual and saw the reverse syncros.
Try a clutch fluid flush and change and check the pedal for correct adjustment. This may contribute a small part to your problem.
I have found that you can determine at what speed your car will allow an easy downshift into 1st (without double clutching). Each car is different. I've seen cars that can go into first at nearly 30 mph while some can't do it above 10 mph. Like someone already posted, don't force it. With clutch in, move the gearshift into the space just before going into 1st where you feel resistance. Keep a firm pressure on the stick and when the car's speed has dropped enough, it will slide in.
It has to do with the "blocker ring" built into 1st gear. It is purposely there to make a high speed downshift into 1st difficult as doing so when you really don't want to, can have devastating results. Spinning up the tranny in a double clutch rev match defeats the blocker ring.

i changed it late last year...i think it was in October. Was up at Revenuer's (John?) place with Peter, Jeremy, Matt...
put GM Syncromesh FM in the tranny and the LE 607 stuff in the diff.
not more than 3-4k miles
