Wink First things to do on S2000

Alright so I did some searching but I couldn't find an exact answer to my question. I'm sure there is something out there but I guess I just dont know the keywords to type for in the search engine. Sorry guys!

I just got a 2000 S2000 with 24.4k Mileage. The previous owner told me to do an oil change since its been a while. So my question are...

What else should I do while I'm at it?
I know you have to change the transmission fluid and some other fluids but at how many miles / how often? (Example: Oil change every 3k miles.)

Thanks alot! I just need to know what to do and then I'll research the specific topics on what kind of fluids are best and etc but if you like you can always add that info for me to make it easier .

BTW: Sorry if my question is a bit unclear. If I need to rephrase just ask.
I am in with my S. I don't want to hurt my baby by not doing the right maintanance.



Compression tests read 160ish across from what I can remember. Is that bad? Some say if its in the same number range is okay, others say it should be between 180-200+, and some say it should be in the 200 area. Please someone give me a 100% sure answer.

I'll try and look for one but I don't think so.. I'll definitely check the manual for some answers if I can find it.

At the top of Under the Hood there is A LOT of information in the stickied threads. Go through and read them.

I would change all of the fluids so you know when they were done. Engine oil (use a OEM filter), tranny fluid (use the honda MTF), rear diff fluid. All of the information to do these is in those threads.

If you are really picky you can also bleed the clutch and brakes.

By the way I did a Compression test on the car before I bought it
and got 160ish across.

Good or bad?
I've searched and it seems like everyone got around 200++ and say that those numbers are what it should be. The mechanic did not give me a % on the leakdown. I'm not sure if the gauge was new or old either .

Car's History:
2000 with only 24K miles and driven by 40+ year old ladies. Only 2 40+ year old ladies and was never driven hard (what the lady who sold me the car claimed and also what I somewhat believe due to stereotype). What do you guys think?

As long as the numbers on the compression test are all close to each other I think your fine.

do a diff, trans and oil filter/oil change
as well as
check air filter
check cabin filter
check brake fluid/clutch fluid

bought mine at 55K, both brake and clutch fluid were contaminated to hell! also check the little stuff like brakes, tires, make sure your spare tire is inflated if youre going to keep it in the car, etc etc etc.


ooh, and take it up to 9K once your sure everythings fine. its fun as fck.

Thanks I will check on those ASAP. I hope it doesn't cost me much .Can someone give me an estimate on what everything will cost? :]

i would get it re-checked to double check - in my opinion that readout is low in regards to the type of owner you are describing.

also, google search "acceptable compression for f20c/f22c", what your trying to look for is a acceptable tolerance specification of compression per chamber. if im not mistaken it should be 180 - 225. if im correct, anything between those numbers are acceptable. when you find your answer there will be a low number and a high number anything in between means your good.


oh, and if you had a mechanic do it - have him write the numbers down in accordance to each cylinder and also the leakdown percent number too...


so you can keep it for your records - just incase you need to confront the previous owner...


i say this from my past experience...

i bought a honda certified s2k with bent valves...

they wouldnt listen to my claims or concerns, got documentation and uncovered records from the previous owner who serviced the vehicle at a honda dealership (they actually had it logged in the database that the car failed leakdown and compression test) - the dealership got me out of the car quick when they seen documented papers and when i threatened to take legal action...

Bleh! I wish I was smarter and knew all of this. I'll call the mechanic tomorrow and ask him what the exact numbers were. I hope he can clear things up. I'd really hate to have bought a bad car.

The mechanic is an idiot.. he said if it was above 200 the engine would have blown up he also said honda claims 130 is the minimum and because of that its 30 above 130 so its excellent. Now I'm just worked up and I cant wait to talk to his a$$ tomorrow.
