Default Forget to screw the oil cap back in

I checked my oil level in the morning and it was 2 xx's below full. so I added a lil oil and brought it up back to the top of the xx's. I somehow forgot to screw the oil cap back in and closed the hood. I drove approximately 88 miles and hit VTEC a couple of times and when I got home I popped the hood and to my shock and disbelieve the oil cap was missing and the valve cover was covered in oil. I panicked and turned it off and check my oil level couple times and it was in the middle of the xx's. I feel very stupid about this and I changed oil and more than 5 quarts came out. I also took a sample to send it to Blackstone labs. When i turned it on i could hear a slight tapping noise, but i think thats thr cold piston slap.I hope I didn't mess up anything

I always put it on the latch mech so if I forget it I can't close the hood. I'm also in the habit of not slamming the hood shut.

Agree. Also do that with tools or put something there to remind me to get tools before closing hood and crunching something. I don't see why you would slam this hood. I actually lower it by hand to about a foot open and let it drop. Thats all it needs. Any higher would create too much of a slam IMO!!!

You still had lots of oil in the engine so I don't think anything bad happened. I will bet the oil came out at high rpms. You may want to get a stethoscope and see if you can identify the location of the sound. May be a TCT but its hard to tell.

sounds fine. Did your oil light ever come on? If so, its a ticking time bomb otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.

Hopefully this will be an easy lesson learned

No damage was done, guaranteed. Oil lost out the oil cap hole is not lost pressure, no worries.

As long as something was showing on the stick you are totally fine.

I did the same thing the other day on my wife's CR-V.

It doesn't take much oil splattered under the hood to look scary. Dipstick level didn't even change.
