The red area is where there is less material.
The springs (the black circles) want to crack open the retainer, starting with the red spots.

Btw... you don't need a new head cover gasket when you take the head cover off do you?
To inspect the reatiners.
Reading this I'm getting curious / worried.

Good picture!

I've had my cam/rocker-cover off several times and have always reused the original gasket. No leaks so far.

Not unless you F it up.

I did end up putting a small tear into that grey hose near the front of the valve cover. the sucker just did not want to come off. It's easier to leave it on the valve cover and slip it off the other side.

Honda will sell you more of that grey tubing, but they only sell it in 3-foot sections.

Retainers are being pushed up on the outside edges and pushed down in the middle. So the upper side of the retainers is in compression and the lower side is in tension. It is tension that causes cracks.
Ahhhhhh! Here I was thinking the keeper taper was forcing the retainer open and causing the crack. You are saying it is the spring acting on the retainer that is trying to taco it. Makes good sense. Thanks!

I have not to this day found a broken exhaust retainer, only intake.

2004 and up have an extra 1k rpm worth of insurance that this won't happen. Unless you do something like 6th to third and dump the clutch

Billman, would you mind answering two of the questions that above posters asked you? I'm curious as well

1. Are the 04+ retainers and keepers improved in anyway? Someone asked and I'm curious as well because you said you replaced it with 04 keepers and retainers.

2. If retainers are inspected after an over-rev and everything looks good, are you in the clear or does it need to be continually inspected? Just curious as this would be valuable information to several members.

Thanks in advance if you find the time, if not thanks anyway!

wow.. the guy is lucky that u found it before it split into 2 pieces

those who can't tell..
look carefully, the valve seats lower than left cuz of widder hole on the retainer thus makes valve keeper lower.

don't u need to check the valve? to c if it touched the piston?
