My S2K recently passed its MOT but the garage ( It is someone I know and would trust) said that the front drivers side shock absorber was leaking oil and should be replaced. I asked him to price up, he can only get Honda parts and whilst the whole unit used to be available its now three separate parts on back order or 2/3 weeks and adds up to £571 plus VAT, they also recommended that both sides were replaced so times two and adding other parts brushes etc and labour its coming out extremely expensive and probably prohibitive, does anyone else have experience of this?

 

?? What country is this for? Are aftermarket TÜV approved coilovers acceptable? Can you buy used parts?

buy used from here, you can grab a stock set of ap1/ap2 full assmebly for $150.00 usd or less? if you can get a set of shocks that are the same MY ( model year ) then i guess you can do just one to pass the inspection. since different MY years came with different rates and valving you might want to match them up.

With the amount of aftermarket coilovers installed, the market is flooded with oem stuff. I have stacks of them.

Im sure you could find a complete unit and bolt it in yourself and save huge money. Post a wtb thread in your local forum.

 

Either pick up a used suspension setup or get a decent coilover setup like Bilstein PSS9.

There is no maintenance...and once you adjust them, they're adjusted. They *may* need to be readjusted once to account for spring sag.

Either of those options would be cheaper than what your mechanic is suggesting.

Lots of people fit after market shock absorbers and consequently, there are often second hand sets for sale for very little money indeed.

The only thing you need to be careful of is that the shocks changed depending on the model year (99, 02, 04, 06 & 08) so it's best to get replacements from the same year as you have.
