I wonder how spraying it was fabreeze or some other fragrence would work with the HVAC on?

i realized i needed to change mine when my cabin started smelling like pee.

After reading this I got the filter and did mine. Black and filthy, just like all the others posted up here. 2005 w/24900 miles, probably the first time its been changed. I will do it every year now after seeing this! My BMW 540i had two cabin filters, which I changed every year, and they were never as dirty as this! Granted, each one of the two, were quite a bit bigger than the one tiny one for the "S".

thats nothing compared to some that ive seen

ie a dead mouse, rat droppings, birds nests, holes chewed by rats, and mold.

i change alot of them at my work

Time for 2001 to get replaced as well. Was kinda stinking too. . . Good reason eh!

I took one out of my car that I'm sure hadn't been changed in all its 70K miles, it was clogged and dust would puff out of the vents every time you turned the fan on!
