Default head noise

i was on my way home today and heard a rattling nise coming from up front. figured something was loose or whatever . got home, popped the hood and gassed it a bit and it sounds like its coming from the head. really loud rattle towards the front.

i know honda is known for noisy valves but this is LOUD. any ideas. gonna take it somewhere monday but this is strange. its a MY00 that just turned 26k.

Could be a valve gone out of adjustment. Could be a noisy cam chain tensioner. A couple of '00s have been known to need new ones.

how much noise does a bad cam chain tensioner make? is there any way to know for certian its bad, or must you take it apart and look?

I don't know. I've never heard one. I've only been told by other owners who have had this problem that it started out being a noticeable rattling at the front of the engine. Tensioners don't always give much warning when they go. With a mechanic's stethoscope, you can isolate the noise and pinpoint it to the front of the engine face as opposed to on top of the valve cover for a bad valve.

I wouldn't be checking the noise, I would be checking the oil level ASAP. It sounds as if the oil level is at least 3, maybe 4 quarts down. I have never heard of an engine oil light coming on with only one or even two quarts down.
