Default Help - head removal

Hey guys, I'm losing ~80-100 lbs. of compression in cylinder #1. ECU is spitting misfire codes left 'n right. It usually just spits 301 (first cylinder), but eventually goes to all four (302-304). Talked to a local Honda guy and he said if the misfire is bad enough, it can set off codes for other cylinders too, don't know how true that is though (any thoughts?). I previously had $1600 worth of head work done to it in KY for what honda said was bent exhaust valves (my dad's fault!). The CEL cleared up, and it ran fine for about 3,000 miles on my way back to California. Of course, when I got back, it came back on. I did a compression check, and voila, same #'s as before the repair - 120, 220, 220, 220. I have 53,700 miles on the motor. No engine mods. I drive it fairly hard, it's had a few track events, but never been mis-treated. Well....then I left my dad drive it across the states - that's when the problem showed up. Anyway...Honda customer service is being a pain to deal with. At this point, I want to rip the head off myself, take it to a (reputable) machine shop, and get the work done. Hopefully it's just a valve/head issue, and not something painful like piston rings. I'm hopefully going to start this tomorrow, and would appreciate any pointers and hints. I've got a Sears locally, so if I don't have enough tools, I can run and get some. I've got a standard set of sockets/wrenches, nothing special. If there are any special tools involved, let me know.

Thanks guys!

I am in the same situation. My car been back to multiple dealers with misfire code. First it was cylinder #1, now its #1, #2, #3, and the dealer said it could be a bent valve too. But what I don't understand is that if it was a bent valve, a bent valve would be noticable all the time.

I may have gotten screwed by the dealer in KY, as I never got a chance to see any of the parts they replaced, or any of the work done. All I got to see was my engine minus the head. I am 100% sure I didn't overrev or anything stupid like that on the way back from KY, so I'm not sure how I could've bent another valve. I'm thinking that there is some other underlying problem that wasn't diagnosed/repaired by the dealer. Instead they fixed a symptom of the problem, and now it's back again. They said a few valve guides and valves were replaced. If I'm remembering correctly, it was the two exhaust valves/guides on cylinder #1. They must've done something because before the repair, I couldn't go one drive cycle with the CEL coming back on (after I had manually cleared it). But then after the repair it worked for over 3,000 miles. I'm former military, now jobless (didn't want to extend my contract), so going back to the dealer is going to be a major hit on my pocket book. I shouldn't even have paid $1600 for the first repair, but they dealer knew I was in a hurry to get back home (I was already out of the Army, just waiting on the car). I got the runaround from them and finally said fvck it, I'm outta here.

Help!

This is the fourth time back to the dealer. They keep reseting the computer and giving it back to me. I gave them the car today again and they say that they are going to take a snap shot of the engine data and send it the Honda engineers and see what they say. Its Bull****! They wont even give me a rental car!

I'll keep you posted on what they find out!

What dealer are you taking it to?

The dealer that I had taken it to in KY kept my car for a week, and when I wanted it back, they said everything's fine, we reset the light and drove it around (~70 miles) and it didn't pop back up. As I was reversing it off of the lift (yes, still in the garage bay), the CEL came on. I was pissed.

Is your car still under warranty? How many miles?

I have extended warranty. But test/troubleshooting is out of my own pocket until they find the problem and if the part is consider under warranty. My car is at 52,000 miles, and its at a local Honda Dealership now. And they still dont know what the f888 is wrong with my car.
