Default Help, oil on bottom of filter after driving!

Hope you guy's can help me out? I changed my oil and filter about a week ago, and I have noticed that there is a little oil on the bottom of the filter now after I drive 30 miles or so. I have wiped it down and I get the same thing the very next time I drive it. Nothing is dripping out, just enough that you can wipe some off with your finger. I did use the correct factory oil filter for the S2000 and I have made sure that it is on tight. Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Any ideas on what could cause this? Should I just buy another filter and put it on and see if that fixes the problem?

Thanks for any help.

I've seen several reports of oil leaks because the old filter gasket was stuck to the engine. As a result, 2 gaskets.

I oiled the new filter gasket before installing it. I also wiped off the filter boss before installing the new filter. And I am 99% sure that the old filter gasket was not stuck to the filter boss, but maybe there was some debris who knows.

Anyway, I just went out and tighten it some more, and you guessed it, I put a crimp/wrinkle in the filter. I started the engine and slowly brought it up to 4,000 rpm and back down and it is not leaking, but should I drive it this way until I can get a new filter? I have to get to work tomorrow, do you think it will be ok to drive it if I really baby it until I can buy a new filter and put it on? Or should I figure something else out?

As I posted in your thread on the other forum:

"Did you make sure the O ring from the old filter wasn't stuck on the filter boss on the engine?"

That was my thought. That happened to me many years ago. I agree with the above, buy a new filter and put it on.

Do you think it will be ok to drive it to the dealership and back to buy a new filter? I mean since I just tightened it down so tight that I crimped/wrinkled the filter? Like I said, it is not leaking, but the filter does have a visible crimp in it now.

If you've crimped the filter it isn't safe to drive. Sometimes when the oil pressure comes up in a crimped filter it will cause the filter to split.. That happened to my wife's hybrid accord. Fortunately it was at a very low speed so no damage. The dealer said if it had happened at a higher speed it could have ruined the engine.

You prolly didn't tighten it enough.

Seeing as the filter is now crimped, yes, you now need another oil filter. When you install the new filter, make sure the old gasket has been removed as has been already mentioned, make sure the oil filter adaptor/base is clean, and put a small amount of oil on the oil filter gasket. Spin oil filter until the gasket just touches the base, and then spin it another 7/8's of a turn. You should be able to spin it 7/8's by hand. I would recommend using both hand's to tighten it instead of using the wrench.

Thanks Racer, that is how I installed it the first time and it leaked. So since it leaked I tried tightening it down with a cheap wrench and then I crimped/dented it. It must have just had a bad gasket.
