HELP....possible brake/hub problems
okay, just last night, i got back from a long road trip from chicago back to va. beach, about a 15 hour drive. about the time i got into PA., noticed a slight squeal/metal to metal type noise from the back right. i didnt panic, just figured it was something that maybe lodged in between the pad or something. well, when i would come to stops, of course, the rythm would slow, but the noise would definitley get louder, still had 300 miles to go and had no choice but to drive it. i pulled of in a rest stop in PA., pulled the wheel, and check everything, also rotated the rotor, and no noise. so i figured it would only make the noise with wieght on that corner of the car. so anyways....i get into DC, plenty of evening traffic, and it is just way too embarassing...not bad above 40 mph, cause it would be very faint, but at lower speeds, it was just a horrible creaking noise, but the faster i went, the more it picked up but turned more into a squeal. it made the same exact noise when you are braking on an incline, and the wieght of the car wants to continue to move the vehicle, and the back brakes makes that deep creaking/rubbing sound. well, to get further into the story, brought it by the dealer this morning, and of course, it went away!!! yeah, pretty pissed. and sure enough i left, with no problems, but of course, like every other story people tell....it came back, and i assumed it was do to things heating up, and of course the the dealer drove it, they didnt drive for a long enough time. well, this is where you guys come into play, i'm bringing it back to the dealer tomorrow morning, very early, need the car by friday morning. one mechanic said that had an s2k come in with the same noise, and they ended up replacing the axle nuts...this did make sense to me. not sure if these axle nuts were retorqued!?!?! well, like i said, the noise only shows up after about 15 minutes of driving, at higher speeds, it is a faint squeal, but at lower speeds it is a deep creaking sound, definitley metal to metal!!! now, the sounds almost go away when i'm doing any type of acceleration. its coming from the back right corner, and i'm pretty sure it has something to do with the whole brake/hub assembly. please, someone guide me in the right direction. need to know if they are going to replace the axle nut, if this will definitley cure the problem or if there has maybe been damage to the hub. would love to hear from people that have gone through this. thanks again everyone!!!!

Did the dealer even look at the hub area, or just do the test drive?
A simple possibility if that you have worn the brake pads down to the wear indicators and they are squealing. Often the inboard pad wears more than the outboard pad, so you need to remove them for a complete check.

I'm going to guess "wheel bearing". If the hub nut has been too low a torque, this may have cause excessive bearing wear. Long highway drives will tend to heat up wheel bearings, while brakes would only get hot with use. It could be the brake pad indicator, but this wouldn't go away. Once the pads are thin enough to get the squealing indicator going, it's going to keep it up till new pads are put in.
Torquing the hub nuts may be too late for the wheel bearings but if the noise goes away, this may just confirm my suspicions about the bearings. Eventually, they'll start up again.

okay, thanks. i'm headed to the dealer right now. i'll keep you all updated. plus, to all the people with the "click", take care of it when you hear it!!!! i had that "click" a few months ago, and should have taken care of it a while ago!!

well what did they do to make the noise stop?

FISH, I'm afraid this may have confirmed my suspicions that your wheel bearing may be worn beyond the point of any salvage, even with hub nut tightening. Cinching up the hub nut will hold the bearing in tighter, lessening the noise, but if it's already worn too badly, it will just get worse and come back. You may need to change both sides when one starts to whine again.
