Bought the car a few years back...01 with 75K from a retired Doc so it wasn't abused. The whoosh whoosh can be really heard when slowing down and in neutral. It's a constant noise. I did change the diff oil and it was dirty. The new stuff didn't really make a difference either. I have driven it 30k and still has the same noise. What can it be?

lol...I seen that as well. I happen to be a dentist too. But the car was cherry when I bought it. Paint and interior showed no signs of racing. Also he had so many receipts from a mechanic doing oil changes etc that pretty much shows that he didn't know much about anything.

The noise is at all times. In gear or neutral. I hear the noise in the transmisson tunnel.

I would check the backing plates on the brakes first. Next, look at the transmission fluid and listen to the tale of the transmission with a scope. Also, try turnining the car left and right in neutral to see if the sound goes away or gets worse.
It could be the diff but check for easy simple stuff first. Good luck

 

The transmission fluid has been changed a couple of times and the sound has been the same.

Turning the car left or right makes no difference in neutral.

The brakes have been changed and the same noise before and after.

I will get it on a lift and have the car going to pin point the noise further.

 

Could be the prop shaft. I had one go bad after about 130k. Bought another one used, it was on its last leg then broke also. I got another used one and it is holding. I have never launched my car. You could see if there is excessive play.

 

I know this is an old thread but did you ever figure this out? I have the exact same noise on my 00 with 75k. Replaced the rotors and pads and rebuilt the calipers as it sounded like brake noise. Tried cleaning up and lubing driveshaft heads and splines and retorquing axle nuts as other posts suggested - didn't make any difference and wheel bearings seem to rotate smoothly and quietly with calipers off. Might try changing diff oil but not holding out much hope.
