Both rubber clamps should be toward the centerline of the car from the urethane bushings. If your's is installed this way and it still moved sideways as far as you described, I would like to see a photo so we can determine where the mistake was made.

 

I will re-check this evening. If the problem doesn't lie between my hat and the wrench, I'll post pictures
