Being at the top X is very fine! A little overfill can do no harm but way too much oil in the engine is as bad as being too low on oil.

Hold on! Drained it to what?
If it's at the top mark, this is considered "FULL", which is just fine and where most people try to strive for after an oil change. You may not understand what the marks on the dipstick mean. If this is the case, you may not have an understanding about other things to do with the car. It might be time to do a little "homework".

But if it was at the "full" mark, there was NO excess. So, it would be interesting to know what you think it should read when there is no excess.

Have you read your owner's manual or have any basic working knowledge of cars?
