Default high pitched whirring noise at speed

hey all,

just wondering if this is normal.. at around 65mph / 4k rpm's my car makes a whirring noise from the rear.. at first i thought it was the tires, so i didnt think too much about it. i recently replaced all four tires and the whirring is still there. could it be my diff? it only happens when im gently on the throttle.

hmmm.. any ideas are welcome.

There are a lot of "normal" sounds that I get from my car, although I only tend to notice them when the top is up (i.e. when it's raining). I wouldn't worry too much since this sounds like what I have experienced with my car from day 1.

i just got the spoon clutch/disk/flywheel installed today..

hopefully that'll eliminate the whirr.. i just hope its not coming from the diff.

I had that same sound, until I changed out the diff. oil. It was amazing how nasty it was after about 10K mikes. I put Mobile 1 Gear Oil in and the sound either went away or is so faint now I don't hear it.

nope, i still get it.. but im getting kinda used to it.. i swapped the tires again since this thread started, and ive ruled out a few things.. its definately not the tires, and its definately coming from the rear end. its not bearing noise or anything like that.. bearing noise would be more of a woo woo woo woo kinda noise.

my pos bimmer made a similiar noise before it started to make grinding noises.. i had to replace the diff on that car soon afterwards.

im going to try to swap out the fluids tomorrow. i havent had enough driving time with the new clutch to see if the noise is gone or not.

i'll post my results shortly.
