Honda oil filter cap wrench fail?
I've experienced this once on an S2000, once on a Civic Si, and twice on an Accord.
I have the cap or "socket-style" oil filter wrenches, and if a dealer installed the filter prior, it's Hulk-torqued. By the time I get to it 5-10k miles later, I sometimes manage to round off the "teeth" or "flutes" on the edge of the Honda oil filter(s) where the cap latches on.
On a few occasions, I've had to resort to the screw-driver trick, which turns a 5-minute oil change to an hour-long, messy affair.
Anyone else here manage to round off the oil filter teeth using the cap-style oil filter wrenches?
Any alternatives? How about the Lisle 63600? Is this tool my best bet to avoid this issue?:

I purchased a couple of generic filter wrenches for the S and standard Honda filters. (Family has 3 Hondas + S) For some reason the filter wrench slips so much on the smaller Honda filter it is useless. Works fine on the S size filter. I find the end of the socket wrench may protrude enough that the wrench will not seat properly and will slip. Try it with the 3/8" square bit just barely in the hole.
To remove the filter you can just use any wrench big enough to wrap around like a Channel lock. To tighten the S filter properly you will need a wrench; do not think a hand tight job is sufficient. The S filter has the gasket between 2 metal rings that must make contact with the engine filter surface. Ordinary filters, even Honda ones for Accords, have just one gasket and ring; you can hand tighten those. That is why the dealer installed filters are "Hulk" torqued.

Agree 100% on the 7/8-turn-after-gasket-contact on the PCX S2000 filter -- I can only accomplish that with a tool.
I did notice that I see more of this rounding-off/stripping on the smaller Honda filters vs. the S2000 filters. Your theory on the socket wrench protruding into the cap makes sense.
I'm more surprised I see this happening on Civics and Accords that belong to friends (and have previously been serviced who knows where) -- figured most places hand-tightened!
+1 I'll try channel locks before I reach for the screwdriver and hammer again...

i use the Toledo cup wrench. identical to the honda one, however it is twice the depth which means it grabs more in the center of the filter rather than the edge...
no issues with that at all!

I have not had trouble with the Honda cap type wrench for my S2k. But, the main reason I own it is so that I can put a torque wrench on it when installing a new filter. Removal can be done with almost anything. Big channel locks. Or, maybe this? - https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-5866-1...FT3S7SA3AQH29N.

As much as I hated paying an inflated price for the Honda oil filter wrench from my dealer, it is bar-none the best wrench out there, easy on and easy off, and never slips, cracks or strips.. I've also owned aftermarket ones that were useless for various reasons, the Honda one just does the job.
