Default How can I determine the rear gear ratio?

I purchased an S2000 yesterday and drove it halfway across the country back home. The car pulls pretty good thougt shifts, but the RPMs seem high. In 6th gear at 70 mph the engine was at about 3,800 RPM. I bought the car from a dealership, so finding out the history of the car can be a challenge.

The car was pretty loud at highway speed so I'm assuming it' due to the gears(did not find any exhaust leaks). Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vince

That sounds right. At 75 mph I cruise at exactly 4k RPM in my '06. When I bought my car last year I was nervous driving it with the RPM sitting so high, but you get used to it. These cars are designed to rev, and to do it reliably.

IIRC the stock rear end gear ratio is 4.10.

Easy count the number of teeth on the input vs number of teeth on the output and divide. For example, the differential ring gear has 4.1 times as many teeth as the pinion.

And how would he see the teeth?

Mark the wheels, a chalk line across the backing plate and the wheel.

Mark the drive shaft.

Turn both wheels once, using the marks to determine one exact full turn.

The amount of driveshaft revolutions is your rear end ratio. Stock will turn 4.1 turns.

Yep, these engines rev! The gearbox mated to the later AP2 (2.2) engine has a little taller 6th gear than the earlier gearbox but 4000ish at 80mph is where these run. This same transmission in 3d gear is a pretty close match to the speedo. 3000 rpm is 30 mph. Seems high until you recall these will rev over 8000rpm/80mph in that gear.

Can take a little while to get used to as many V8 cars are running half that engine speed.
