Apply 12v to it and see if it clicks.

If it's like an H22, you just take it off and clean the metal filter.

it's very rare for them to fail. Corrossion on the outside doesn't mean anything on those pieces, they will rust if exposed to moisture and salt.

Have you changed an intake or exhaust recently, that tends to smooth out the vtec kick. It happened on my car when I made ane exhaust change. A smooth vtec transition is usually a good sign.

To remove it, unplug the electrical connector and three bolts, there is a screen behind it. You can also take it apart as it is in two pieces and see if the interior plunger moves freely. Reinstall the bolts to 8 ft lbs upon installation. I doubt it's your issue though.

Everything is still stock. I like the vtec kicked even if smooth vtec is good for the engine. Do I remove the three top bolt or the side one? Thanks

Be carefull. The screen o-ring can stick to the head and tear.

the side bolts hold the solenoid to the block, the top bolts connect the two halves of the solenoid which encloses the plunger that you test for smooth engagement.
