How do I test the alternator?

I bought a used battery (money is tight after paying 2 deductibles for 2 insurance issues) and it started up easily the first couple of times then wouldn't turn over after that so I thought maybe the alternator isn't charging the battery. Now after the test, it looks like I'm just going to have to buy a new battery.
