Default How do I test coil packs?

I got the dreaded P1399 code and I'm just beginning on the journey to figure out what's wrong. I started searching the threads for P1399 and reading the info. I'll pull the plugs shortly but they were changed about 30-40k ago, have 160k on the car now. I want to test the coil packs but how can I test them other than switching w/ another one (moving pack in cyl1 to cyl4, etc.)? Is there a way to test them with a multi-meter?

Here's what Billman recommended.

Here's the misfire thread as well. Unfortunately it's a bit harder to troubleshoot until you get a specific cylinder to code.

It's commonly recommended to check the valves. With your mileage you have either already done a couple or are badly in need of an adjustment.

Thanks Matt.

An update...I pulled all the plugs and looked at them. They all looked fine so I put them back in and started it up and still got a misfire. Put the CLE reader back on it and got a P302 (misfire in cyl 2). So I swapped out the coil pack from cyl 2 with one from cyl 4 and it pulled a P304 and P300 (general misfire) so I'm hoping it's just an issue w/ coil packs. We shall see what happens after I replace them.

Anytime brother.

I hope you have better luck than I did. I'm having a bad couple of months with the coils and now the head gasket.

Changing the coil packs seemed to do the trick. It immediately ran better and the CEL didn't blink although it did come on and stayed lit. I cleared the CEL and let it run for a while then put the code reader back on and no codes came up. Crossing my fingers that's solves the problem permanently.

The car is an AP1 and coil packs are for an AP1. Replaced packs for cyl 2 and cyl 4.
