Default How do I "turn the engine"?

Hey fella's, my S has been in storage since December and I read somewhere on here that it's good to occasionally "turn" the engine
so that some component I believe the lifters don't sit in one position for too long. I don't want to start the car up but would prefer this approach since it's less taxing on the motor.

Does anyone know how to do that and what tools are needed?

TIA!

Put a 19mm box wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn clockwise. This bolt has a pink chromate finish. Make sure the tranny is out of gear.

You could always put it in gear and push it a foot or two

if the car will only be sitting for a few months, you should be fine without turning the motor, but if you plan on not driving it for more than a year, then you should worry about turning the motor.

Also, it's not about the lifters when you turn the motor, but more of the rings not getting stuck to the cylinder walls.

It's much easier to turn by hand. You don't even need a breaker bar or anything, a 1/2" drive ratchet does just fine.

one thing im a fan of is taking a dallop of oil and pouring it into the cyl...then rotate the crank slowly and let that oil get on teh rings and it will eventually slip past the rings but it will help keep things lubed up.

[quote name='slipstream444' date='Jan 26 2009, 05:02 PM']The "push the car and pop the clutch" method is not the best idea at all - it puts all sorts of undesirable loads on the engine's internals when there's no oil present on friction surfaces.

it will make the turn easier with the plugs out since you will be building up compression when the motor turns with the plugs in.

how long is the car going to be sitting for????
