Default how much oil is lost when i take off the filter

about 2 oil changes ago - i found out that my filter had a small leak - the dealership wrinkled their eyebrows at me as they said the filters are installed by hand with no tools and it was a tool that caused the hole. wasn't me.

anyway, now, just having gotten an oil change I was checking out things at home and noticed the new filter had a ding in it. I am paranoid now about to take a roadtrip and don't want to .. guess I made my point

If I remove the oil filter without otherwise draining to quickly put another on; how much oil will I lose - does oil keep pouring out or just the amount in the filter Iam replacing.

The filter is above the pan so the only oil you'll lose is in the filter. Let the car sit for an hour or so before the change.

If you let it sit overnight, you might only get a few drips. It depends on how well the anti-drainback valve is working.
