hubcentric rings

Default hubcentric rings

i posted this in the wheels and tires forum, but i think i will get more responses here..

My new wheels came in over the weekend, and I couldn't wait to install them.

Well, the hubcentric rings fit fine on the passenger's side of the car, but for some reason they didn't want to fit on the driver's side. It seems like there is a buildup of rust that wouldn't let the rings fit on the car. Is there any downside to only using two of the hubcentric rings? I drove the car and I had no shakes/vibrations, and everything fit flush.

Side question, my wheels came with a lock/lug nut adapter? I am not really sure as the label on the box of this adapter was scratched off. Any idea as to what this is for? btw the wheels are prodrive gc-07

if you know how to put a wheel on properly, you don't really need it anyway.

try cleaning the hub bore up and see if it can help, the quality plastic hubcentric rings works better than metal ring. well, at least the high quality one, not the cheap one you see on ebay that uses cheap material.

alot of people just throw it on and tighten the lugs

Well now you've got me freakin scared of not using those rings in the future! I didn't on my old car either. I always follow a star tightening pattern, and used a torque wrench though.

Something wrong with that?

yeah, clean your hub with a wire brush to get the rust and crap off. then use your centering rings.

you are torque'ing properly but you need the centering rings to keep your wheel centered and put even pressure on your hub bearings.

The wheel load is taken up on the hub spigot- not the wheel studs. Take a wire brush and clean the centre area of your hub thoroughly, then apply copper grease(also known as anti-seize compound) all over the hub face and the spigot area. Put the hub centric rings on the spigot and mount your wheels, you will never have sticking wheels again.

if you have an aftermarket wheels(well, unless you have some aftermarket wheel made for the specific car), most of the time the bore size on the wheel is larger than stock(to fit as much different car as possible) when you put it on the car, the wheels is rested on the lug(lug centric) stud instead of the center of of the hud.(hudcentric)

next time you pull the wheel, with all the lug nut out and wheel still on the car, you should see there's more space under the lug stud than on top of the lug stud(which is normal, due to gravity). most aftermarket wheel uses a tapered lug nuts which in theory, will center the wheel but in most case it's close but not dead center.(vibration, stress on the studs, etc)

so what's the solution? try lift the wheel in the center as close as you can then put the nut on.

I have Prodrive GC-010G and had a similar issue. I just spent about 30 minutes cleaning the hubs and put some antiseize on.

As for the lugs, if they are Ray's there are 4 lugs that are 7 sided and that is what the adaptor is for.

I am not talking about the lock, I was talking about an adapter that came with my wheels.
