took the car to a Honda dealership to get the valves adjusted. the service guy said the mechanic found a few tight valves and adjusted them.

about 20 miles and a whole bunch of start ups and no CEL!!!!! i noticed my idle is smoother, exhaust note is a bit quieter. some puffing still comes out the exhaust, probably since the spark plug in cylinder 1 was a bit fouled, but it's not bad like before.

thanks billman250 and walkingdrunken for all the help!!!!!

for the valve adjustment and new gasket i was quoted $225, but the service guy gave me a military discount that came out to $199. The spark plugs, ngk, were also hooked up by a buddy that works at another dealership for $17 each. So I spent less than $300 which is outstanding for me!
