30 weight oil will handle much higher temps than 90 degrees. Like others have said the 5w is the start up weight. I run 0-30 for decreased start up wear and I am in Dallas.

Although we should always follow the recomendations of the engineers who built the car.
The engineers designed the car.
The legal department wrote the manual.
Be carefull who you "always follow".
There is nothing wrong with making an informed decision against "The Manual".

IMO.

QUIKAG, your knowledge is wrong. Our owners manual recommends 10W- 30 or 5W-40. You might want to read it prior to giving advise in this forum.

Mannix16, I would follow the owners manual next time.
I checked and you are correct. However, you seem to insinuate that using 5W-30 would be dangerous. That's a crock of crap. If anything, using 5W-30 versus 10W-30 would provide even more protection at start-up which is where most of the wear occurs.

In the owner's manual, it specifics those two viscosities for 'fuel economy' purposes depending on local temperature.

I don't. I change mine every 2000-3000 miles in the S no matter what... Our cars consume oil at a high rate depending on year and milage...

Why not just add more then? You're wasting your money changing good synthetic oil out at 3K miles.

It's your wallet.

J,
I think I went through this with him not long ago. He's just got this idiosyncratic philosophy about mixing oils. When he's down to the "ADD" mark, he just changes oil. "Goofy", but it's his money and there's no reasoning with him.

I track my car frequently, and usually change the oil about every 5K miles. In the meantime, I probably add three quarts or more along the way, as a single track day usually makes an entire quart disappear.

Do the oil spirters (sp?) have anything to do with the amount of oil it uses up?

No. They spray an oil jet at the underside of the pistons.

Must be nice... maybe we should go rummerging around his trash bin to reuse his oil for another 2Kmiles
