I need some help...Check Engine Light
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out...
I have a CEL/MIL and the code that came up was for the air pump. i'm not so mechanically inclined so sori in advance for the noob questions.
1. what does the air pump do for the car?
2. where is it? I recently got into a a front end collision and just got the car back and thats when the CEL came on
.
3. is it safe to drive the car normally?
4. can this be a DIY job, if the problem is the air pump?
thats all i can think of... if anyone has any ideas, the help would b greatly appreciated!
Thanx,
Bo

This will help
It's an emissions device. It pumps air into your exhaust to help burn the hydrocarbons. If you remove, you'll need to fool the ECU into thinking it's still there, or you'll never get rid of the CEL.

The Air pump is located on the driver's side under the front bumper near the fake duct. I would guess if you had collision damage repaired they may not have check if it functioned or just hooked it up incorrectly. Have you tried pulling the back up fuse and clearing the fault ? if it reappears it an actual problem, if not it may have been related to the accident.
Immediately after a "cold" start, get out and put your ear down near the left front bumper. Do you hear the pump running? It'll only run for a few minutes, so don't wait too long. If it's running, it's possible that some of the vacuum hose connections were damaged or came off in the collision. You'll need to trace them to make sure they are all correct, not cracked and intact. If the pump is NOT running, this is the first thing you need to address.
