Default Innacurate/inconsistent dipstick?

This may seem crazy, but I check my oil dipstick like five times in a row and sometimes it says I am almost at the L and sometimes I am right at the H? I just switched to Royal Purple 10w-30 maybe 100-150 miles ago.

To get an accurate reading you should read your dipstick from the lower side, on flat ground with a completely cold engine.

With my far sighted vision I almost find it impossible to read the dipstick with new/clean oil, I sometimes wish I was running Royal Purple just to better read the dipstick, either that or I wish I could add colouring to my oil, lol.

Agreed!

Trying to read the stick after pouring in a fresh change of Castrol Edge is like trying to see where you've missed when painting new white on slightly old white emulsion.

Royal Purple has its benefits.

You are wiping the dipstick clean before you put it back in, right?

Double dipping is a must, I think the dipstick picks up oil from other parts on it's way up on the first removal. If you don't clean and re-insert the dipstick you will get huge variations in readings. Definitely wipe and re-insert prior to getting an accurate reading.

I've seen variations of 1+ quarts when doing a first read without double dipping, and then doing a proper clean and re-inserting the dipstick to get an accurate reading.
