Default internal diff housing marks

Hello guys,

I split my differential to rebuild it and the gears etc look fantastic, especially for a 110k diff! However the top casing (finned) have very strange markings, they are many very shallow cracks in a spider web pattern. Really odd kind of damage which I think would be caused by overheating and heat stressing the casing?

I will upload pics tomorrow as its too late but wondered if anyone had experience of this? Does it mean new casing?

Cheers,

Nick

Most likely normal, it is a natural result of the casting process.

Just differences during cooling or choice of material etc? It's just a tad confusing as to why it would be there, as like I said the gears etc look great.

Those lines are formed in the casting process and are not any issue at all, they are normal.

fandabbydozy Cheers for the information.

Any other advice for checking out condition of the LSD unit? Think I remember looking in another thread about using some sort of mineral to clean it out?

Place both stub axles back into the diff and turn them in opposite directions they should spin freely or with little resistance.
You can clean the LSD with brake clean and blow it out with air.
Also, when you remove the large bearing from the pinion check under the pinion head for stress cracks. I have been finding a great number of rears to have cracked pinions.

Cheers for the help, it doesn't matter if I am replacing the Pinion with a new FD set though?

Prior to taking the head off it seemed to rotate easily enough, however very randomly it would stick a little bit but would take little force to overcome and spin again. (no oil in the case obviously).

The LSD sound like it works fine.

What gear are you going to install? If you do not use the old gear set the cracks will not matter.
